MEET THE DIRECTOR
Mike Selman is in his third year as director of the Turfgrass Producers of Texas. He farms approximately 2000 acres of turfgrass in Texas and Oklahoma. All of his production is shipped to Texas with his major market being the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He produces mainly 419, U3 and common bermudagrassses and some St. Augustine.
Mike says he got into the sod business “accidently” in 1994 when a supplier said he wasn’t going to sell grass any longer and wanted to get out of the business. He offered to sell Mike the farm. It was in pretty bad shape but since he needed the grass, Selman decided to buy the farm in order to maintain a supply. He now has two farms in Texas and two in Oklahoma.
Selman says he has enjoyed getting to know other TPT board members and learning about the industry throughout the state. He feels it is important to be a member and participate in the organization. He says that as an association, the members have an opportunity to do more for the industry than working alone.
“What we are doing with the San Antonio Water System will have national implications. We have to stay ahead of issues like water.” Selman said. He would like to see more North Texas growers involved in the organization.
Selman and his wife, Louisa, have seven children. They live in Garland on Lake Ray Hubbard. He says they enjoy the lake in their spare time and are active in the Lakepoint Church in Rockwall.
