STUDY TO LOOK AT TURFGRASS ECONOMICS
How many acres of sod are there in
Texas? Everyone has an estimate but no one knows for sure. The
Census of Agriculture puts the figure at around 37,000 acres.
However, members of TPT currently have about that amount and it is
estimated that non-members are growing another 10-15,000 acres.
The Turfgrass Producers of Texas
Board of Directors has decided to fund a study that will address the
economic analysis and impact of sod production in Texas. Dr. Lawrence
Falconer, Professor and Extension Economist, and Sarah McMahon,
Extension Program Specialist with the Texas Cooperative Extension will
conduct the study.
They plan to use a survey to define
the current status of the industry in terms of total acreage, acreage
by grass species, and number of producers and to collect information
on operational and marketing techniques. They also plan to conduct
farm visits to gain information about specific production practices,
equipment complements, and cost data that will be used to develop cost
of production estimates for various sized operations.
Once the data is collected, they will
utilize it in an input-output model to estimate the impact of the
Texas turfgrass industry on the state’s economy. The Board feels that
this information can be very useful in working with legislators and
other decision makers.
TPT encourages its members to
cooperate with Dr. Falconer and Ms. McMahon by completing the survey
and providing information as needed. Individual information will be
kept confidential.
The Board has agreed to provide $5000
for the study. Funds for the grant were partially provided by
proceeds from the auction at the annual conference.
