Texas Turfgrass producers should be looking for a
survey in the mail in the next few weeks concerning the economics of
turfgrass production. This study is being financed by the Turfgrass
Producers of Texas. Dr. Larry Falconer, Extension Economist, will be
in charge of it.
We know that turfgrass is an important
factor in Texas. However, it has never been studied in detail. No one
knows how many acres of each species is grown or where it is grown.
This study should provide that information as well as data on costs of
production.
This information is important and we
need it. Most legislators and other decision makers have no idea that
turfgrass is as important to the state’s economy as it is. We need good
information when we are talking with them.
As a producer, this information will be
helpful to you in developing your business plans for the future.
Three members of the TPT board are
serving as an advisory group for the study. They are Glen Rod, Chance
Stone and Boston Brown. If you have any questions, give them a call or
call John Cosper, Executive Director at 979-531-9306.
Dr. Falconer is aware that individual
producer information must remain confidential and has assured us that it
will.
